Louise Fresco on European fear of global change in agriculture

By Webmaster, 5 March 2013
.
One could tell two opposing stories about agricultural modernization over the past two centuries. A story about the amazing successes of science leading to an unprecedented food availability and wealth. But there is also a pessimistic story about the disasters that man has brought onto the earth as a result of economic growth. Ironically, those who have most benefited from scientific progress and the growth of wealth are the ones most doubtful of its future utility. For some in Europe, we (...)

Fiorina Mugione on entrepreneurs who drive development

31 May 2011
Some entrepreneurs are pursuing a dream – that of having their own businesses. Others become entrepreneurs as a matter of survival. They start businesses because they have no other options for making a living. In either case, if economic growth is there to nurture these fledgling companies, if counselling and advice are offered, if financing is available at reasonable terms, then these firms may prosper. The rules that structure social interaction can take the form of laws enforced by a legal system or norms enforced by individuals in the society. Constraints on human prosperity will come from neither (...)

It is however important to note that relative to developed countries, populations in developing nations are more vulnerable to and will be more adversely affected by climate change. Overall, climate change will affect productive capacities, in particular in the agricultural and natural resources-based sectors, which form the basis for (...)

Upcoming issue of the ATDF Journal on orphan crops of Africa

11 May 2010
The upcoming issue of the ATDF Journal is dedicated to the Orphan Crops of Africa. Although orphan crops are also known by different names (e.g. underutilized-, lost- or disadvantaged-crops), they all refer to a group of crops that are vital to the local economy of developing countries due to their suitability to agro-ecological and socio-economic conditions. In order to boost food production in Africa more emphasis should be given to the genetic improvement of orphan crops.
