Does innovation in agriculture harm biodiversity?

The twentieth century was not, in fact, a disaster for
crop diversity as an influential study published by RAFI in 1983 suggested. A recent publication comparing the varietal availability of the same forty two crops studied by RAFI shows only a small decrease but also demonstrates that diversity has been sustained by the addition of thousands of new varieties. It is therefore time to re-visit the cherished diversity erosion thesis.
